Olive trees in Balıkesir, Türkiye – source of pure olive oil for traditional Castile soap production.

What is Castile Soap? – History, Benefits, and Uses

Castile soap is a centuries-old natural soap made primarily from olive oil. Originating in the Castile region of Spain, this gentle yet effective soap has become a staple for those seeking a sustainable, chemical-free alternative for personal care and cleaning.

Castile Soap 100% Olive Oil

Castile soap is a traditional, all-natural soap made primarily from vegetable oils – most famously, olive oil. Originating in the Castile region of Spain centuries ago, this gentle yet highly effective soap has been valued for its purity, versatility, and sustainability.

Unlike conventional soaps, authentic Castile soap contains no synthetic fragrances, dyes, or harsh chemicals. Instead, it is crafted using natural oils, water, and lye, resulting in a biodegradable, eco-friendly product that is safe for both people and the planet.

At Anatolian Castile Soap, we continue this centuries-old tradition using extra virgin olive oil harvested from our own family groves in Balıkesir, Türkiye. Each batch is handcrafted following artisanal methods, producing soaps that are as gentle on the skin as they are effective for cleaning. Whether in liquid or bar form, our Castile soap is perfect for personal care, household cleaning, and a wide range of professional applications.

How Our Castile Soap is Different
  • No Citric Acid or Artificial pH Adjusters – Our precise formulation naturally balances the soap’s pH during the curing process, eliminating the need for chemical additives.

  • No Synthetic Fragrances – We never use artificial scents; fragrance options come only from pure essential oils if desired.

  • No Artificial Dyes – All colors are achieved through natural botanical ingredients such as spirulina, turmeric, or activated charcoal.

  • Made with Olive Oil from Our Own Groves – Extra virgin olive oil sourced directly from our family’s groves in Balıkesir, Türkiye.

  • No Palm Oil or Harsh Chemicals – 100% plant-based formulation, gentle and safe for all skin types.

  • Biodegradable, Vegan, and Cruelty-Free – Environmentally responsible and ethically produced.

  • Small-Batch Production – Every batch is handcrafted to ensure consistent quality and authenticity.

  • Enriched with Natural Oils – Optional blends with coconut, castor, or argan oil for enhanced lather, creaminess, and skin nourishment.
History of Castile Soap

Castile soap originated in the Castile region of Spain during the Middle Ages. Made primarily from olive oil, it quickly became valued across Europe for its gentle yet effective cleansing properties. As trade routes expanded, the knowledge of olive oil soap-making spread throughout the Mediterranean, finding a natural home in regions rich with olive trees.

In Türkiye, the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts – particularly Balıkesir, Ayvalık, and the surrounding areas – have been central to olive cultivation for centuries. These fertile lands, blessed with a warm climate and mineral-rich soil, produce some of the world’s finest olives, making them ideal for authentic Castile soap production.

Our own story is deeply tied to this tradition. Over a century ago, our great-grandmother Sofina began handcrafting olive oil soaps from the harvests of our family groves in Balıkesir. She worked entirely by hand, using techniques passed down through generations. Sofina passed away in 1983 at the remarkable age of 99, leaving behind not just her recipes, but a legacy of craftsmanship and respect for nature.

In 1993, we established our first major company, carrying forward her heritage. Today, while we maintain the same core ingredients and artisanal spirit, we combine them with modern hygiene standards and equipment to meet the needs of wholesale partners worldwide.

How is Castile Soap Made?

Olive Oil Harvesting
Olives are carefully handpicked from our own family groves in Balıkesir, Türkiye, ensuring the highest quality for soap production.

Cold Pressing for Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Freshly harvested olives are cold pressed to extract pure extra virgin olive oil, preserving all natural nutrients.

Mixing with Lye (Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide)
The olive oil is gently blended with lye, beginning the natural saponification process that transforms oil into soap.

Enriching with Other Natural Oils (Modern Addition)
While traditional Castile soap was made solely from olive oil, today we enhance our formula with other nourishing plant-based oils – such as coconut oil for a richer lather, castor oil for creaminess, and argan oil for extra skin conditioning.

Natural pH Balancing
Because our soaps are crafted in precise proportions, the pH naturally stabilizes during saponification. We never use artificial pH adjusters like citric acid – ensuring a pure, chemical-free product.

Curing / Maturation Process
The finished soap is rested in special curing tanks for up to one week, allowing it to settle, develop its full character, and become ready for packaging.
